This family wanted a room where they could occasionally enjoy movies and music, yet still use the room for other functions, while maintaining the elegance and style of the adjoining living room. The solution was a gorgeous burl-walnut cabinet with hidden speakers, convenient storage, and a drop-down Stewart projection screen.
With the Stewart screen rolled up and hidden away, the cabinet becomes an elegant piece of furniture with no hint of its theater functions. Where the screen was before is a gorgeous panel that shows off the beauty of the burl walnut.
The centerpiece cabinet features hidden B&W speakers with acoustically transparent speaker cloths and acoustic batts lining the speaker enclosures. The heavy-duty drawers offer an abundance of storage while Mid Atlantic rollout/swivel racks on both sides provide easy access to gear and cabling. The racks also feature an automatic fan ventilating system with inlets hidden in the toe kick area of the cabinet.
This is a great example of how imagination and creativity can turn even a relatively small room into a theater space and still allow it to be used for other purposes. The Sim2 DLP is mounted on a bracket designed and built by the owner and painted to match the finish of the projector. The box to the left of the leather chair is a Velodyne subwoofer, with the sub's amp hidden in the gear rack inside the cabinet.
All of the design details of this theater cabinet were done by the homeowner, including the clever use of all of the space inside. The type of wood and the finish were chosen to match and compliment other existing pieces.
